Chapter 1 of your text provides a brief history of I/O Psychology as well as a preliminary overview of the major activities of modern I/O Psychology. Among the several founders listed in the chapter, pay particular attention to Fredrick Taylor. Taylor developed a system called Scientific Management. In one sense, Taylor was ahead of his time as his approach was consistent with many modern approaches to I/O Psychology; for instance, notice his list of ideas at the top of page 11 of your text. On the other hand, his Scientific Management approach also held that: 1) there is one best way to do any job and his goal was to find that one best way and then have every worker perform the job in that way, and 2) workers were economically motivated. In other words, workers were interested almost solely in money; after all, why would they leave the farm and move to the city to work in a dangerous, noisy, and dirty manufacturing plant where workers were often treated. Using the tenants of “one best way” and “economic motivation “, Taylor would almost always find the most efficient way to do the job and get more work and productivity from workers. It was assume that more work and better would result in more pay for the worker and more profit for the company; however, companies did not always compensate the worker for the increase in productivity. One of the untended consequences was that Taylor became known as someone who exploited workers by getting more work out of them. In summary, Frederick Taylor was a controversial figure. Company management liked his work because, of his ability to increase productivity, but workers often saw him as someone who took advantage of them.
Using your text and other resources that you might find on the Internet, in books, or even on YouTube, discuss the contributions (pro and con) of Fredrick Taylor. Include the idea that workers are primarily motivated by economics (money). Consider workers in the early 1900's and also consider today's workers.

Taylorism or Taylor's scientific management concept
Scientific management concept is one of the classical theories and is also known as the 'father of management '. The problems noticed by Taylor were no efficiency and systematic performance by workers and traditional ways of working were still being followed. He wanted to maximise the output given by Every employee.
1. Task setting : task setting is where every day task is assigned by the manager to the workers and has to be decided everyday. This is defined as the quantity of work assigned to workers on a working day.
2. Differential payment system : the workers would be given more amount of wages that would motivate the workers more and complete their assigned tasks on or before time. This would make them help earn more wages.

Criticisms
- This system was not capable of recognising context and requirements of the workers.
