Question

Researchers often use a method called an experiment in order to study the causes of human and animal behavior. Design such an experiment based on a change in behavior you have observed yourself or your roommates this past semester (e.g eating or sleeping habits, exercise regime game paying, etc.) Select a behavior that you are particularly interested in studying, and then the experiment to investigate a possible cause of that behavior. Address the following questions. What is the hypothesis you will test in your experiment? What are the independent and dependent variables? Who will be the subjects or participants in your study? What are the experimental and control group conditions? Here, you may assume that you have the resources necessary to conduct your experiment and that you can control or manipulate environment of your subjects as necessary. For example suppose your hypothesis is as follows Higher levels of stress from a heavy course workload increase eating activity. Assume that have the ability to control the workload, etc, of your subjects. How will you assign your subjects to groups? What are the possible results of your study and what might these results indicate about your hypothesis? In a multi-paragraph essay, describe your experiment and explain how you will conduct this experiment to test your hypothesis. Be sure to propose your hypothesis, and then describe the independent and dependent variables, the experimental and control conditions, the subject or participant groups, and the conclusions you can draw based on the results of your experiment include information from class materials and readings to support your discussion.

Explanation / Answer

Title: Examination phobia and eating habits

Introduction:

Psychology studies human behavior, which involves both the body and mind. They are interrelated and interacted upon each other.Any change in mental process (such as observing, knowing, imagining, thinking, thinking, feeling) and mental stress may leads to unusual behavior. For example some eat more than usual in depression or some very less, because of depression, anxiety sleep pattern also changes. It may very significant in some times. As being a lecturer in BSc Nursing college I observed such changes ( students are not taking dinner) among the students before the examination. So I decide to conduct the study to find the causes. For the purpose I will take students of BSc Nursing as a participant, where anxiety was an independent variable and eating habits dependent variable. My hypothesis is

Hypothesis:Anxiety leads to change in eating habits

Significance of the study:

Anxiety refers to things such as a mental state, a drive..... a response to particular situation, a personality trait or a psychiatric disorder. It may leads to various behavioral changes like change in eating habits, or change in sleeping pattern or any unusual activity.

As behavior is based on body mind realtionship. Any unpleasant emotion like fear, anxiety are responsible to change in behavior.

As being a lecturer in BSc nursing college I observed that students have high work load and less time i.e many internal examinations, postings in clinic, survey, medical camp and so.They are packed till examination due to various activities mentioned above, so they become very anxious just before the final examination, because don't get the enough time for theoratical studies. I Observed mostly students are not taking the dinner, and of course it is affecting their health, so decided to find out the causes and solution. So planned for an action research.

Methodology:

Hypothesis : Anxiety of examination leads to change in eating habits

(1) Anxiety of examination

(2) Eating habits: It is predicted that just before the examination the students will score high on anxiety scale more likely to skip the dinner.

Study sample:

The present study deals with the anxiety rate and eating habits of the students before the examination. For the purpose 150 students will be taken for the study.

All the nursing students of 1st year and 2nd year of Asharam college of nursing (Kamptee.Nagpur.Maharashtra.India) will be administered the test after rapport formation and assured about the maintenance of confidentiality would give consent for the study would be concluded.

Study design:-

A descriptive study to be conducted on the graduate nursing students. The present investigation would be (three levels of anxiety mild, moderate and severe X Eating habits )

Tools:

(1) A questionnaire which includes some socio-demographic variables ( age, class, gender, education, family structure ) parents and educators attitude ( such as permissive, repressive and democratic) formed the first part.

(2) Hamilton anxiety rating scale

(3) Eating habits observed and noted by hostel warden under the supervision of me.

(4) Statistical analysis of variance

Spearman's correlation coefficient will be used to find out the relation between anxiety and habits

Inclusion Criteria:

1. College students belonging to 1st year and 2nd year of the college.

2. Students who gave consent for participation in the study.

Exclusion criteria:

1. Students who have refused to give consent for the study.

Results and observation:

The researcher wishes to examine the relationship between anxiety rats and eating habits among the students. For the purpose she will use the Hamilton Rating scale and observe and note the eating habits of the students. Therefore Pearson's coefficient correlation will be an appropriate measure.

A scatter plot will be prepared to check the linearity of both the variables. The results may be as

Students having mild anxiety will not found any change in eating habits and will take regular diet.

Students having moderate anxiety may skip the dinner.

Students having severe anxiety may skip dinner and sometimes lunch also.
