Week 8:

What critical factor do you believe has the greatest influence on whether a teenager develops a particular disorder or life event of the type we are reviewing this week—eating disorder, substance abuse disorder, early pregnancy, self-injury (“cutting”), gender identity, or other health concern?

Pick one of these to discuss, and present how your thinking has evolved over the course of this class. How do you look at the causes and treatment for a particular disorder or life event differently than you would have before this class began?

Explanation / Answer

The implications that teenagers have, or the practices practiced by the teenagers is a reflection of what environment the teenagers have received throughout their childhood. Instances such as self cutting or injury are a major effect of their low self esteem or depression.

Self cutting

When these children have been subjected to constant expectations or pressures throughout their life time. These pressures can be in the form of excessive academic pressures coming in from parents, parental indifference in which parent's constantly subject both siblings to comparison and prefer one over the other. Such actions may occur when these children might have failed immensely to meet such expectations and thus commit such actions in agony and pain. Also, such actions may be as a result of relationship upsets that most of the adolescents face during their school and college years. Any such heart breaks or betrayal might make these children commit such actions, as they feel this is their only way out. While doing so, they have the mentality that hurting themselves may correct things that are happening "wrong". Children may also be subject to such derailment if there is public humiliation by their parents in comparing them with other neighbouring children.
