According to the news report of; Hindustan times, dated Jan 09, 2016 the relations with the Sunni state of Saudi Arabia and the Shia state Iran worsened; after the execution of the Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr at the hands of the Saudi authorities along with 46 others. This has lead to an unprecedented level of militant activity and breaking off diplomatic ties between the two countries.

2. Due to the religious demarcations; these two Muslim nations are in conflict with each other. Sectarian violence has been prompted because of these differences which started in the 7th century over a dispute over the appointment of caliphs.
