Title of the article: Bullying in the digital age: a critical review and meta-analysis of cyberbullying research among youth.
Name of the publication : Psychological Bulletin, 2014
Volume number : Volume 140, No. 4, 1073-1137
Purpose of study: Every thing has a positive and negative side including internet. With the growing dependence and usage of internet, there have been heavy implications which assert to be highly negative such as cyber bullying. This review was carried out in order to critically study the research happening in the field of cyber bullying.
Procedures used in the study: the methods used in the study include the general aggression model and the mixed effects meta analysis. In the first step 14 databases were searched to identify online behaviour variants. Second, the present reviews of cyber bullying were searched. Various behavorial psychology journals were searched followed by contacting the active researchers for any material that remained unpublished or the conference studies.
Conclusions: Conclusions made in the study were that cyber bullying is not a global phenomenon and there are many factors that affect and influence a person to be inclined towards it. Also, there's a relationship between cyber bullying and depression which increases its prevalence.
Limitations: Limitations included biasing shown by the publishers or the publications. Only statistically significant data was published and the rest was ignored. These resulted in comparatively higher data. Causala statements could not be established between the behaviours and psychologies of people who carry out such cyber bullying. The author recommended to refine the terms and definitions of bullying and include all data in the publications for more accurate results.
