Question
Activity: Real and Ideal ________________________________________ Procedure 1. The handout lists 30 personality traits. You are to classify the traits first based on how you currently view yourselves, and then again based on how you would like to be. Both times, you are to identify 10 traits that are characteristic, 10 traits that are uncharacteristic and 10 traits that are neutral. 2. When you have completed the task, count the number of traits that were classified the same way on both runs through the list. 3. Please write a one page summary of your results and consider the following: What can you do to increase the congruency between your real and ideal self?
Handout: Real and Ideal
Instructions. Thirty personality traits are listed below. Your first task is to identify 10 traits that you believe are characteristic of you, 10 traits that you believe are uncharacteristic of you, and 10 traits that you believe are neutral with regard to you (neither characteristic nor uncharacteristic). Your choices should be based on your current perception of yourself, and it is important that you identify 10 traits in each case, no more and no less. Indicate your answers by putting a plus (+) in the first column if you think the trait is characteristic of you, a minus (-) in the first column if you think the trait is uncharacteristic of you, and a zero (0) if you think the trait is neutral with respect to you.
Sometimes, the way we think we are, and the way we think we would like to be, are different. Therefore, go back and classify the traits according to how you would like to be. As before, identify 10 traits that you would like to be characteristic of you, 10 that you would not like to be characteristic of you, and 10 traits about which you feel neutral. Indicate your answers as before by placing pluses, minuses, and zeros in the second column.

So after calculation, it is found that for me as an individual - currently,I have total 17 traits present in me now and 13 traits absent in me but while filling in for what I would like to be , the numbers sums upto 21 traits I want in me and remove 9 of them. The analysis gives a clear idea that I am now different then the one I want to be. I lack in me some of the traits which I wanted to be. I am not an ideal person (Humanistic Carl Rogers Theory of personality) as per my understanding and to increase the congruency between my real and ideal self , I need to attain self actualisation. I need to have this positive attitude and outlook for real life situations, trust my own feelings and be open to new experiences and aware of others and our feelings and emotions. I have to believe in myself , in believing what I do is right and accept the new changes and oppoortunity life brings to me.
For example : My ideal self wants to be honest but my real self lacks honesty
Situation: I spent extra bucks of money on shopping , but lies to my father about it , in the fear of being scolded. The lies to my parents is not what I ideal self would say. The fact that I was dishonest to my father brings a negative feeling to me but I would have been honest and said the truth to him that would have left a sense of mental well-being leaving and piece of mind. So, I should rather be happy about what I do and what I feel.
