Explanation / Answer

1. In which point of view is the story “Battle Royal” told? Describe the protagonist and explain what you think is the most important conflict in the story. Is the conflict resolved? Use at least one direct quotation

The Battle royal has been coming from Ralph Edison's work and consequences that have come from being a black writer before 1950s. His point of view is a reflection of what his ancestors though and what they have been through. He showed that he wanted to be ashamed of his own self for being ashamed on his ancestors who were once slaves. Once when Ellison was about to give a speech, he was intimidated by it, due to the fact that it is going to be given to the white people. "I felt a wave of irrational guilt and fear. My teeth chattered, my skin turned to goose flesh, my knees knocked. Yet I was strongly attracted and looked in spite of myself. Had the price of looking been blindness, I would have looked." (Ellison 939)

2. What did you learn about American history from “Battle Royal”? How much have race relations and conditions for African Americans improved since the timeframe of the story?

From this we learn that the Americans had a complicated history in which the African Americans or the blacks were discriminated against. Not only did the African Americans struggle to get their identity as not being an inferior race, they were kept enslaved for a long time. Not only did such prejudices exist in the society, but at workplaces, schools and every other institution where the discrimination persisted. It was a long struggle for the African Americans to achieve an equal status, which still persists in some situations. The situation presently is such that there are strict laws against any such discrimination and anyone who faces such issues can complaint or sue that person.
