For a paper in my cognitive psych class i must identify the independent and dependent variables in the musics affect on academic performance. The testing procedure is 10 minutes of a Mozart piece, 10 minutes of a relaxation piece, and 10 minutes of silence before an IQ quiz (Stanford-Binet intellencence scale).Three tests were given, a pattern analysis test, multiple choice matrices test, and a multiple choice paper folding and cutting test (all three were at the .01 level of signifcance). Making them equal measures of abstract reasoning ability.What are the independent and dependent variables?

independent variable is the variable of atest which is manipulted by the experimenter so as to see the effect of the variable on the dependent variable.

dependent variable is the major aspect of the study to be studied. it is effected bythe manipulations in the independent variable and conclusins are drawn on the basis of this.

here the independent variables are the process of conduction which one is used for which group i.e. 10 minutes of a mozart piece, 10 minutes of a relaxation piece and 10 minutes of silence. the dependent variables are the reasoning ability judged by performance on the three tests  i.e. pattern analysis test, multiple choice matrices test and multiple choice paper folding and cutting test
