Philip Zimbardo, the researcher who designed the experiment, has spent his career studying how the environment impacts how we behave. The Stanford prison experiment was a gret social psychology experiment that was conducted in 1971.
It was a simulation study, wherein the conditions fo a prison get up were simulated with 24 participants from within the university, that were segregated into prison guards and prisoners.
It was conducted in the basement of the Stanford University and th participants were 24 males who went through a psych evaluation for eligibility and were largely white.
The independemt varibale was the allocation of roles, and the dependent varibale was the study of the behavior thus forth after the role allocation. The independent varibale was manipulated by shuffling the roles every now and then.
The results were of dire consequences as the pseudo prison setting began to devolve into conditions that were the most unfavorable. It led to discord and almost tipped on the brink of psychological abuse for many of the participants, especially the ones eh owere prisoners.
The study has had a huge impact on the way that the correctional facilities and prisons all over America function. This study helped understand the phenomenon of group think, and the polarizing decisions that were taken with respect to some of the instances and tasks.
The study is considered highly unethical due to the psychological abuse that most of the participants were subjected through. Due to the maltreatment that some of them faced and the demands that were made by Zimbardo to the prison guards were inhuman and damaging.
The Experiment could have been made better by making the simulational requirement more clearer to the ones participating. By having a more human and opne approach than a hard approach which would make the investigator not budge despite atrocities.
And by having a psych evaluation and counseling after the experiment.
The social experiments are conducted for a reason in order to create a microcosm of the generality of things so that it helps explain and understand and thus find solutiona to certain social phenomenas.
The power of situation is something that helps explain human behavior. According to Marx as well, the thirst for power is what leads to a conflict in the environment as people try to fight for the dominant aspect that makes them lead other to conformity. The participants in the study who were prison guards felt the power of the situation, having the power to manipulate and guide the behaviors of their counterparts by force and thus a feeling of superiority.
The inapct this experience would have had on me would be one of utter distrust and turmoil, for is an induced situation can take a turn for the worse, what would have been the scenario for humans, as a society, in reality.
