Question

Something like this writing I am not sure if I ever told you this, or if I already said it a hundred times, I am a survivor or a nasty civil war that shred, and continues to shred my homeland to pieces. so the topic of aggression, when viewed in magnitude, is mostly related to wars and genocides so for this assignment, I would like you to read an intriguing correspondence between Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud (n J. Strachey, Ed., 1932/1964, The standard edition of the completepsychological works of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 22, pp. 197-215, London: Hogarth) relating to the question of war, and whether it is a fact of life; totally unavoidable. And write a letter responding to either or both authors. you are encouraged toexpress agreement or disagreement with their positions and to comment on theperspectives on human aggression that each offered. hint Was Einstein and/or Freudoptimistic or pessimistic about our destiny? Are we destined to wage warbecause of experiences (nurture), some unfortunate disposition (nature), or acombination of both? read on: In his initial letter,Einstein pondered whether humanity could ever be free from the threat of war Heblamed war on both "the political power-hunger" of governments and hunanity's"lust for hatred and destruction. " He asked Freud for insights on how toeliminate armed conficts. Freud's response emphasized culture and instinct. Violenceevoived from conflict between indlividuals and could only be thwarted by lawscreated by communities. Organized communibies, argued Freud, use violence tosettle disputes because of humanity's self-preserving (erotic) and destructive(death) instincts. Freud concluded his letter by asking Einstein a question: "Why do you and I and so many other people rebel so violently against war?"

Explanation / Answer

Dear Einstein and Freud ,

I agree with both about the government and its lust for power and maintaing its hegemony. The colonization and neo-colonization is symbolic of this phenomenon , but one needs to ponder upon a question, 'Is power corruptible or magnetic to the most corruptible'?.I disagree with Einstein as he has reduced power to something which is corruptible in its essence. Historically, if we analyse power, power reveals a subjective side to it and is fluid when it comes to corruptibility. For example, during his struggle to self preserve and survive the brutality of Nazis in the concentration camp, instead of resorting to violence as suggested by Einstein and Frued, Victor Frankle used the power of meaning and purpose of life and survived the inhumane conditions in ghettos for the Jews. Infact, his power and determination to self preserve was so strong, that he created Logo Therapy (a clinical intervention to fight psychological disorder) after the defeat of the Nazis .Hence, the assertion that power is corruptible and that one will always reduce to violent means to self preserve is flawed. Yes, we humans have become unempathatic to the sufferings around but we are not apathetic. As long as there is a longing for a humane condition, equality and justice ; war will be avoided. Yes, protests to encounter injustice would increase (as we see today) but we still have humanity left. War is the last resort for self preservation; infact it is the anti-thesis of self preservation.
