warning message is influenced by many factors including familiarity with socially relevant signs and symbols and people’s accurate perceptions of these, how the message is delivered, and the message itself. warnings often fail to change people's behavior as either the warning goes unnoticed, or the warning is seen but ignored. For instance, a warning sign may have a poorly perceivable design in terms of diffused and light colors which blur the content. For instance, in a ‘ no horn’ road sign, using a red sign against a black background does not make the symbol of a horn stand out effectively against the background and the message may be lost on the drivers.
Another factor which can reduce the effectiveness of a warning sign in communicating about a change in behaviour is the size of the sign and the proportion of pictures vs text used. Thus for instance, in a ‘dead end street sign’, putting a small black skull sign with a black line underneath it on a proportionally large white triangle shaped signboard would make the message lose its effectiveness as the cars that are at a distance would not be able to read the sign clearly unless they drive close by or step out of the car.the risk of accidents can thus increase with such unperceivable warning signs.
