QUESTION 1 Discourse, then, is not a neutral medium for representing what is happening elsewhere but instead is an active medium through which people construct versions of social reality." The above quote is from page 276 of your reading from McVittie and Mckinlay's"Attitudes and Attributions." In your own words, please explain the quote above. Included in your explanation should be a specific example that shows how discourse is an active medium through which social reality is constructed (use a different example than the one given in your reading). Approx. 75 wordsExplanation / Answer
The written and spoken communication, the conversation, or the discourse are not passive or neutral in constructing attitudes and attributions, but actively participate in construction of these with regard to social realities. For example- The probem of rising juvenile delinquency in any country is due failure of its social institutions. The rise in delinquency is represented in particular manner, the reason given is the failure of social institutions as family, schools etc. But rise in juvenile delinquency could also be due to inadequate infrastructure to support good schools, or it could be also due to rise in poverty. Thus, there could be a discourse, a debate, or a conversation regarding the reasons for this social reality of region. And as this discourse progress on, it would form opinions among people for or against the reasons that being presented. Thus, discourse activily constructs attitudes and attributes regarding a social reality.
