Question

In July 2015, an elderly woman being treated for several health issues attended a local health clinic. The medications for her chronic diseases placed her in an immuno-compromised status. While waiting to be seen by her primary care physician, a child came in with his mother, sneezing and coughing. Nothing more was thought of it until the woman died from pneumonia—caused by measles. This was the first death in the U.S. from measles in 12 years.

discussion question

An RN who works at the clinic refuses to have an influenza vaccination. She does not have allergies, nor does she have religious objections. She “doesn’t believe in them.” Create a script for a conversation with this employee, urging her to reconsider, and detailing the consequences of her continued refusal.

Explanation / Answer

A script for the conversation to convince the RN is based upon the importance of proper care and preventive treatments as small negligence can lead to be life threatening issues. The case of lady got infected from the sneezing child and got dies due to measles will be discussed to bring strong emphasis upon the proper vaccination that could prevent such viral infections as a part of preventive health care. Besides, the role of RN to deal with the patients and coming up in close contact will make her more prone to the infections. Anything to the RN will be highly damaging to the family members. Such script should be used to start the process of conversation and convince her for the vaccination.
The conversation should start with the script and focus should be upon the scope of getting infections and the degree of damage to take place if a small but very important vaccination and other preventive treatment are not taken up by the RN. While going ahead with the conversation, her all doubts, queries and concerns are asked, listed and answered one by one. With proper reasoning, logical approach of conversation and the self-understanding of the importance of such health care by RN, will make her go with the vaccination plan and become safe.
If not convinced at all, it will be the organizational policy of the clinic to have their all the staff including RNs to go with all necessary vaccinations to continue the employment.
