This will help you honestly assess your own development and more objectively evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using an integrative approach to counseling. What are two advantages and two disadvantages of practicing within the framework of one specific theory as opposed to developing a more integrative approach consisting of several therapies? Give a detailed description and rationale for both sides.

(Answer) Let us assume that there is a comprehensive clinical therapist who handles all areas of psychology, named John. There is also a therapist named James, who merely handles depression and the various issues that arise from it.

Advantages – John is able to recognise a wide area of disorders. James, on the other hand, can only manage problems of depression. John might not be able to diagnose a patient who is suffering from a problem other than depression and may even misdiagnose them.

John might be able to recognise multiple symptoms if he ever has a patient suffering from more than one disorder. If both the disorders in question are not linked to depression, James might not be able to tell them apart and might inaccurately diagnose them.

Disadvantages – James would be able to offer a better focus to a patient suffering from trauma or depression. John, on the other hand, might take a while to diagnose and pinpoint the cause of the problem that a patient is facing. Furthermore, he might have to shortlist his symptoms in order to properly categorise the problem and plan a focused treatment plan.

James is likely to have patients with similar symptoms and would be able to recognise a problem almost instantaneously. James would even have more case studies within common categories and will hence be able to have specialised experience as opposed to John. John might need years of practice to get as good as James when it comes to handling the problems arising from depression.
