Explanation / Answer

ERP systems provide comprehensive support of End-to-end business management processes and data in a single system providing single source of truth. Thus, selection of ERP system for an organization is very critical, and it should encompass major stakeholders rather than an individual from finance or IT.

Typically, the team for selection decision making should include a project manager, leadership representative, and functional experts (from various departments like warehouse, customer service, payroll, Logistics, Procurement, Finance etc.) along with the ERP experts (mostly consultants). Functional experts, who shall be the primary users (it can be managers, team leads or end users), provide perspective and they must ensure that the business needs are addressed through ERP. Not just meeting the needs, but must provide perspective on scalability, ease of use, reliability to meet with organization long term objectives.

Considering the challenges in decision making when large number of members are involved, sometimes it is recommended to involve the key functional representatives depending on ERP usage. But here role of project manager should be to discuss with the stakeholders who are not represented in selection committee, and ensure their suggestions are considered.
