Question

Let's focus on decision making for this discussion. Pick a fictional character from a movie, tv show, or book and describe a time when they had to make a big decision. Based on the reading from our textbook on cognitive processes and strategies, which two cognitive processes did they use when making their decision? I found Table 8.1 on pg. 230 to be helpful in providing a summary of the different processes. Why did you pick these two strategies? Ultimately, do you think using these strategies were helpful or harmful?

Explanation / Answer

I would take up a movie called as Queen which won national award in India. In this movie the heroine dreams about marriage and going to Europe on honeymoon. But her fiance ditches her on day prior of marriage. But still she decides that she wants to go alone to Europe to see monuments.

I can find Fixation as she continues with her decision to watch Europe and doesn't losses her mind. She can not see it from different angle. She goes to Europe and becomes independent and changes completely.

2. Belief perseverance - people told her that her decision was wrong, but she wanted to continue with the same. She ignored others and listened to her heart.

These strategies are very helpful. I see myself in that movie often. Even I don't like that people who play with emotion, in such cases fixed ideas and ignoring others leads to success.Which even they don't think that it is correct. Many people have succeeded who follow their own heart and mind.
