Question
1. In a conditioning experiment, a rat receives some trials in which a light is followed by 1 food pellet. On other trials, a tone is followed by 1 food pellet. As a result, the rat now becomes active whenever either the light or tone is presented. Now, in a new test, the light and tone are presented together. Based on the Rescorla-Wagner model, what type of behavior do you expect to see, and why?
2. Continuing with the example in Problem 4, suppose that when the light and tone together, they are followed by one food pellet.
- What type of conditioning will occur to the light, and why? excitatory or inhibitory
- What type of conditioning will occur to the tone, and why? excitatory or inhibitory
Explanation / Answer
Since both CS is presented together , rats will have expectancy of two food pellets. As per resorla Wagner model , us depends on combined strength of two stimulus. If one is excitatory other is inhibitory then us will have low association but if both are excitatory, as in this case, us will have high association.
If one food pellet is presented, it is below expectation of rats. So for both tone and and the light, inhibition conditioning will occur that means their association will become weak.it is because if one gets below expectation inhibition will come into play .
