Question

Once you've had a look at external materials relating to the IPA, complete this post. Since it is partially a worksheet, you should all submit your own thread but feel free to comment on each other's posts and discuss your answers.

------------------
First! Now that you've started thinking about using the international phonetic alphabet, think about the following and write a brief response to each question:

1. Why is it useful to have a system like the international phonetic alphabet when studying language development? What sorts of information can we as researchers gain from using this (for example, across languages or when preparing papers for others to read)?

2. What sorts of information have we talked about so far that we cannot demonstrate in written form without additional tools?

NEXT! Now that you have learned about IPA, use the knowledge that you have gained (and the help of outside resources, as needed) to complete the following exercises. To type in IPA, you can use an online IPA typing resource like http://ipa.typeit.org/ or http://westonruter.github.io/ipa-chart/keyboard/

1. Use the IPA to transcribe your name (first and last)

2. Read the following English words in IPA and write the word (or words) with convential English spelling.

kek ____________________ skim ____________________

dvlp ____________________ lægwd ____________________

pzdi ____________________ tldhd ____________________

ntnen ____________________ ln ____________________

klf ____________________ fkshnd ____________________

3. Use the descriptions of IPA symbols to select the appropriate symbol. Then, give an example of a word that starts with the sound described.

Voiceless alveolar fricative ____ ____________________

Voiced bilabial stop ____ ____________________

Velar nasal ____ ____________________

Voiceless interdental fricative ____ ____________________

Voiced labiovelar fricative ____ ___________________

Explanation / Answer

Answer 1.

An International Phonetic Alphabet became necessary in order to create a single written representation of sounds that was independent of any particular language, accent/idiolect and spelling system. whatever the ‘official’ or standard pronunciation of a language is there are many accents and idiolectal variants and a code that focuses on the sound per se enables that to be recorded and understood across the different users. Thus, It permits linguists, who are themselves habituated to particular phonetic configurations to understand diverse patterns of speech and their interrelations. For instance, the IPA is helpful to researchers involved in cross- cultural studies to accurately  describe the psycho-social dimensions of language-that is, just how these people speak in particular circumstances in describing the linguistic life of ethnic groups.
