Question
Conservation is “the knowledge that quantity is unrelated to the arrangement and physical appearance of objects” (223). This assignment made me really think of ways children can be tested to see if they have issues with conservation. Instead of coming up with my own, because I wasn’t sure if I was on the right path when coming up with my own example, I decided to use one from the book to help me.
The type of conservation I used was measuring volume of an object on page 224. This can be tested on children fourteen to fifteen years old. This task was done using two different shapes of a container, as well as turning the object being measured in a different direction.
I think this task is a good way to test if a 14-15 year kid has conservation issues because by this age they should know that even though the container and object look different because of the size of the container or the position of the object, the volume of the object is the same.

Explanation / Answer
Using two different shapes of a container in order to measure the ability to conserve is quite useful. However, as far as my understanding of the phenomena goes, conservation develops in the concrete operational stage, which ranges from ages 7 to 11 years. Therefore, by the time children turn 14 or 15 years old, they should typically be able to demonstrate the ability to conserve quite well. In my opinion, for this age group, a more complex task would be more suitable. For instance, it has been demonstrated that solid volume conservation is more difficult to master in comparison to liquid volume conservation.
