Explanation / Answer
Citation Deuze,Mark? Media Work. Cambridge:Polity Press,2007.
Nutshell statement - The crucial tenant of Mark's arguement is how media practitioner's life is constantly being changed by advancement and changes in cultural, social, economical and other paradigms which has given rise to convergence culture(as proposed by Henry Jenkins) and liquid life (Bauman), which Mark uses to explain the constant change in the fundamental nature of media work.
Key concepts- Deuze answers the most basic question , " what does it really mean to work in a media setting as a professional "?The constant pressure to deliver, exploitation of new employees and performance anxiety to deliver exclusive stories are common stress triggers that exist in the industry. The cause behind the above is partly globalization and outsourcing of employment and production.Work production, consumption of this production by the audience and play is what characterises the current essence of ' what it is like to work in the media'. The book contains eight chapters in total which is devoted to theoretical concepts as that of liquid modernity, macro factors(technology, social media) which influences the work techniques in media. The audience is a core ingredient in media work. The complexity of understanding its audience is increasing as media is unable to understand and preserve effectively its growing audience, who are active consumers of technology and prefer to switch media content providers as per their requirements. With so much pressure to fulfill the work commitment, Deuze reflects on how to cope up . Letting go of the power and control is one of them. In fact, participative media should be encorporated, which involves actively sharing media and creative content power with the audience. This is very well witnessed in new start ups (media and publishing houses).
Critical Question - Few question thst emerged as I read the text, which hasn't Bern touched upon by Mark is.
How can media work dissociate itself from the funding of political power and create a culture of transparency? Is today's constant struggles and fragmented state of mind of media workers (due to work stress) ,a new media reality? How is the power distributed in a participatory media , beyween the media cobtent creators and its audience?
