According to the Sociologist Erwing Goffman, a total institution is an enclosed place of work and/ or residence with a bounded system of order and norms which organise the activities and social interactions among the members. Traditionally, state facilities like nursing homes, army camps, prisons and mental hospitals were identified as total institutions where a great number of similarly situated people were cut off from the wider community for a considerable time,and made to live together in an enclosed, formally administered round of life. However, in our time, more and more public places can be seen as representing the characteristics of total institutions,

To this end,one can see our current college and universities as modern day total institutions where the members or students behaviour is controlled by the norm of high academic performance or ‘grades’ and there is a marked hierarchy of command or authority such that the board of administration, the senior faculty tend to have a higher stake in the decision-making process and the students and younger faculty and non-academic staff are on the lower levels of the power gradient. Universities demonstrate another key aspect of total institutions: control of the chain of social interactions by an external authority. As more and more academic spaces in the United States have faced deficits in their federal aids, this means that the intelligentsia is more prone to a direct surveillance by the State. While communication has become more widespread due to social media, it has also expanded the scope of monitoring and institutions now police students private text messages, their social media posts, and even their external voluntary associations. Faculty and staff, too, are finding their words subject to investigation. This highlights how many university campuses place greater value on mass production of high academic achievement and competition while simultaneously underplaying the role of student’s creativity and unique differences. Under such an institution, the members are subject to unprecedented surveillance and potential sanction for violating the established chain of social interaction.
