Question
Using PsycInfo or PsycArticles, find ONE empirical, peer-reviewed journal article that describes a STUDY conducted using adolescents as participants in ONE of the following areas:
Biological changes in adolescence and their effects (e.g., emotionally or socially)
Cognitive developments in adolescence (Ex’s: You could find an article looking at how thinking develops/ differs between children and adolescents, or looking at gender differences in cognitive developments in adolescence, or examining how cognitive development affects school performance in adolescence, or studying socioeconomic differences in (e.g., how SES affects) cognitive development in adolescence, or exploring abnormal cognitive development in adolescence (e.g., in those with a cognitive or mental disorder such as autism, Down Syndrome, depression, addiction, etc.).)
Cultural differences in adolescence (The article you find could focus on ANY area(s) of cultural difference. Examples include family structure, education, gender, morality, political beliefs, religion, etc. The article could include adolescents from one non-Western culture, or a comparison of adolescents from 2 or more cultures.)
Read the article, and summarize it in 1-2 pages (NO MORE THAN 2 PAGES PLEASE). Your summary should be written in THIRD PERSON and should include a description of:
The study’s Purpose
The study’s Method (including Participants and Procedure)
The study’s Results (a brief summary (no statistics) here; you can often find an easier-to-read/ understand summary of the results in the section of the article entitled “Discussion”)
The study’s main Conclusion
Write a REACTION to the article in 1-2 pages (NO MORE THAN 2). Your reaction should include answers to the following questions (NOTE: It is okay to write in FIRST PERSON for this part of the paper):
How did you feel about the study and its findings? Don’t tell me here if you found the article hard to read or if it was boring. Talk about the study itself and whether it was of interest to you/ if it related to your life personally/ if it was surprising or obvious, etc.
What are the implications of the findings? That is, what can/ should we DO with the information found by the researchers? How can parents/ teachers/ politicians etc. USE this information to improve the lives of adolescents?
If you had to design a follow-up to this study to answer additional research questions on this topic, what would you study? Think of AT LEAST TWO POSSIBLE new studies that can be done.

COGNITUVE PERFORMANCE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT : HOW DO FAMILYBAND SCHOOL CONVERGE?
A study conducted by Ana Filipa et.al., published in European journal of Education and Psuchology in 2017. The aim of the study is to fond how family and school affect cognitive performannce and academic achievement of 406 Portuguese children attending preschool education and 1st cycle of basic education, aged between 4 and 10 years old. Sample consisted of equal distribution of girls and boys, living in rural and urban areas in northern and central region of the country, attending public and private.
Measures used were, the Cognitive Skills Scale for Children from 4 to 10 years old- ECCOS 4/10- a cognitive assessment battwry of individual application, createf for the Portuguese population. The appopriately took this scale so that it assess six cognitive operations- evaluated through tasks using two types of content - verbal and performance, maintaining a similar structure of traditional WISC. Academic perdormance was evaluated by gradings of teachers. They made sure of all the ethical possibilities. The academic qualifications of parents were also taken in to account.
The results obtained showed that there is significant impact of family and IQ. Regarding the variable school, the results donot confirm its input on children's IQ. Regarding academic achievement, family and school play a determinant role. Also attending rural schools and public schools present better school classifications.
In conclusion, this study confirms the importnat role of family in children's cognitive performance and academic achievement, but school only assumes a significant impact on academic achievement.
This study is showing a different result from what is expected and is therefore a highlight of the study. So it is very useful in understanding the importamce of family with the academics if children. If I were to conduct a follow up study, then first i would do the study in Indian setting and then will do an intervention for the parents if similar results found in Indian serting.
