Question

Task 2: a) Differentiate between Hierachical and Spreading Activation models of memory organisation. Use diagrams to demonstrate your understanding Diagms must he hand-drawn. No points will be awarded for taking pictures from the internet). (30 marks) Task 3: The Truth About Walkers The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly discourages the use of walkers. They say that walkers not only slow down Baby's walking development but also are extremely dangerous, thousands of toddlers end up in the hospital every year due to the popular item. Canada already has a ban on walkers being sold in the country and the AAP is recommending the United States take the same measure. a) Based on your knowledge on pre-requisites for walking, do you agree with the above statement? Support your answer with empirical evidence (30 marks)

Explanation / Answer

1.Hierarchical activation model:In a hierarchical model of memory organisation, the relationship between the categories are related to each other in a “hierarchy”,i.e,according to a relative authority or status type of manner.General categories are further subdivided into smaller or narrower categories, in an ascending or descending order. It is a part of the scale-free model category. Each category or “layer” in the hierarchical untit, has certain elements that provide it’s contribution to the same, meaning the are correlated in nature.

2.Spreading Activation model:Spreading activation model uses the methodology of identifying biological, artificial neural networks, associated networks and semantic networks. This is done by labelling or rather categorising a set of source nodes. This type of activation may initiate from alternative paths, which may have similarities or “markers” and eventually terminate when these paths emerge.

I dont think that the usage of walkers for babies is a good idea.Studies show that the usage of walkers, brings about unusual movements in the baby’s body, which the body might not be ready for thus, giving rise to unusual movements and delayed muscle control or stability. It can also be dangerous for the muscle development of babies as their muscles are extremely tender and can sprain easily.Babies should learn to balance and walk at their own pace, when their bodies are ready.
