Question

I am doing a research project, my topic is looking at how sleep, or lack of sleep affects ones weight. The prompt for the theory is below.

Identify the theory you will test with this hypothesis. Define it and explain a little bit about it (this requires citations). Then state specifically how this theory informs your hypothesis, and how you are testing this theory by testing your hypothesis. o If no named theory exists to inform your hypothesis, you have two other options, which were discussed in lecture: (1) a conceptual model that informs your hypothesis, or (2) ample, cited empirical evidence (previous studies) from the research literature that directly informs your hypothesis. Remember, these options should not be your first choice, but they can be acceptable if appropriate and written up well.

Can you recommend any theories that may apply?

Explanation / Answer

I was unable to find any specific theories that explained the relationship between sleep and weight. However, there are several laboratory studies and multiple epidemiological studies that have linked short-sleep duration and poor-sleep quality to risk for weight gain. These studies seem to explain why this maybe the case, but not all of them are modelled on a specific theory. You can check this link below, it has cited the results of numerous such studies, this can be helpful for your review of literature:
