Question

Kevin spreads his caloric intake over 5 small meals, eats only hard boiled eggs and edamame (boiled soy beans) for breakfast, and joins a bas- ketball league so that he gets an intense 1 hour workout every day.

His trainer suspects that his metabolism has been chronically low (near BMR) with his previous lifestyle. If his BMR is 2000 Cal/day,

(a) How much more energy is he burning for each element of his new routine?

(b) How much more energy is he burning in total? Give increase in total daily energy as both absolute and factorial increase over BMR. Assume that there is no difference in caloric value between his two diets, that his intense exercise elevates his metabolic rate over BMR for the duration of the workout to a similar level as playing squash

How would Kevin's metabolism have been affected if he severely re- stricted his caloric intake before he saw the trainer? What are some possible symptoms or effects of this response

Explanation / Answer

1) Eating small 5-6 smalls meals on everyday basis will help Kevin lose weight as it

Adding protein will help Kevin build a goodmuscle mass in his body . This will also provide a boost to the metabolism and helps in losing the extra fat in the body.

Excercise is a very important part of losing weight and keeping the body healthy . Doing excercise daily will help Kevin to keep his heart healthy and also to boost the metabolism.

2)Hard boiled eggs have caloric value of 155 calories. Edamame has 122 , So he gains 180 calories in his breakfast .

Eating 5 meals a day will help him gain almost 1800 calories, which is minimum number of calories that a person should have to have a normal BMR.

So the total caloric intake of Kevin is almost 2000 calories .

Total calories burnt - Kevin does a 1 hour intense workout , which is equal to almost 400 calories per day burnt.

Also his basal metabolic rate , which is the energy burnt in the resting body is equal to 1800 calories.

This makes the total calories burnt to be approximately 2200 calories .

3) If kevin goes on a restricted calorie diet , his body will first exhaust all the transient energy storage in the body .

After that , his basal metabolic rate might fall because of the less amount of energy in the body .

So it decreases or slows down the metabolism ultimately .

But if Kevin starts doing exercises along with the diet , then there may be no deficit in the metabloism because excercise increases the metabolism .
