drive.google.com https://d3bx https://d3bx. PART II-Short Answer (25 points) 1. List and describe 4 of the eight functions that humans must perform to maintain life. 1. Maintaining Boundaries- "inside" remains distinct from "outside" 2. Movement-all activities promoted by the muscular system. 3. Responsiveness-ability to sense changes in environment and react to them. 4. Digestion-breaking down food into simple molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. 5. Metabolism-All chemical reactions that occur within the body cells 6. Excretion- process of removing waste from the body 7. Reproduction- production of offspring. 8. Growth-increase in size BONUS: The female ovaries and the male testes are a part of which body system? Can these organs be members of more than one organ system? Why or why not? The female ovaries and the male testes are parts of the reproductive system. But they also secrete hormones, as does the endocrine system, therefore ovaries and testes function within both the endocrine and reproductive systems.

Explanation / Answer

1. Metabolism: It is the process by which biomolecules are broken down
and macromolecules are formed from smaller molecules. Metabolism is very
crucial for body without which the body may not be able to utilise the
food we eat.

2. Responsiveness: It is the ability of the body to respond to external stimulus.
It is the unique character of the living things without which we may not be able to survive.

3.Excretion: the process by which the body eliminates excretory/waste products
from the body. This system gets rid of the waste products stored in the body
and hence avoids toxic response of such wastes.

4.Growth: It is also one of the unique characters of living beings.
It is the process of increase in size of a living thing by elongation and
division of cells.

The female ovaries and the male testes are part of reproductive system.
These reproductive organs apart from producing germ cells, are also part
of endocrine system as they are also involved in hormone production.
Hormones secreted by them include progesterone, estrogen, testosterone etc.
