ock Questions 7-10 Before After Plot x EPP size (mv) Chd EPP size (mV) lbul mEPP size (mV) Question 7: What does the left-most column in plot x indicate? (see arrow in plot x above) The number of times more than one synaptic vesicle was released when the presynaptic nerve was stimulated b. The number of times no vesicle was released, even though the presynaptic nerve was stimulated The number of times a single vesicle was released when the presynaptic nerve was stimulated The number of times the muscle cell depolarized when the presynaptic nerve was stimulated Question & Which quantal analysis term is used to indicate what is counted in order to get the values in that left most column in plot x (see arrow in plot x above)? Units b. Vesicles c. mEPPs d. Failures Question 9: The data for questions 7-10 were recorded from a muscle cell at one neuromuscular junction before (left) and after (right) an experimental manipulation that changed the strength of this symapse. Based on what we discussed in class, which of the following could be a valid explanation for what caused this change in synaptic strength? Assume baly one thing changed to cause these results . A larger number e (ACh) molecules were released from the synaptic vesicles A smaller number of acetylcholine (ACh) molecules were released from the synaptic vesicles c.) There was anincreasenthenumberof postsynaptic ACh receptors postsynaptic ACh receptors There was a decrease in the number of There was an increase in the number of synaptic vesicles released when the presynaptic neuron was There was a decrease in the number of synaptic vesicles released when the presynaptic neuron was stimulated Question 10: Which of the following variables is/are affected by the concentration of Ca in the solution around the neuromuscular junction in these experiments? There may be more than one correct answer, select all that apply a. n C. X None of the above is affected by concentration of Ca

Explanation / Answer

7) EPP stands for end plate potential. They are caused by depolarization of muscle fiber caused as a result of binding of neurotransmitters to the receptors present in post synaptic membrane. The size of EPP depends upon the number of neurotransmitters released into the synaptic cleft from synaptic vesicles seen in pre-synaptic membrane. Therefore, the left most column in the plot X indicates the number of times when no vesicles were released even though when presynaptic membrane was stimulated (option b).

8) The quantal analysis term that is used to indicate what is counted in order to get the values in the left most column is mEPPs.
