Question

A student was looking at a slide and was confused about the type of connective tissue she was looking at. It definitely had predominantly elastic fibers in it. What were the possible types of tissues she was looking at? How would she differentiate between the possible types? (10 pt) 4. During a lab exercise Dr. Sweet asked a student what she was looking at under a microscope. The slide consisted of densely packed protein fibers that were running parallel and formed a cord. There was no matrix surrounding the cells. There were no striations, but small nuclei were visible. What was Dr. Sweet's response when the student identified the tissue as skeletal tissue. Explain why she had this response. (10 pt) MacBook Air 6 8 0

Explanation / Answer

Answer 3. The student is looking at the slide of ligament.

Connective tissue proper in our body is divided into the:

Areolar, adipose, tendon and ligaments.

Areolar and adipose are composed of fibers both collagen and elastin, macrophages, plasma cells, matrix etc. Adipocytes are specific to adipose cells, that act as insulators for our body.

However, when we talk about dense regular connective tissue then tendon and ligaments are included into it. Tendons are composed of collagen fibers and ligaments are composed of elastin fibers.

Because of elastin the ligaments are more flexible than tendons and helps in attaching bone to bone.

Answer 4. Dr. Sweet denied the student response, because that was a slide of tendon which is a part of connective tissue not skeletal tissue. Because parallel fibers is a characteristic feature of tendon. These fibers are the collagen fibers which are abundant in them and provides them the rigidity. They help in joining muscle to bone.

Skeletal tissue includes the bone and the cartilage and the characteristics mentioned are not possessed by them.
