Question
Given the following table
Using the data above as the initial conditions in each case, determine the effects of the following procedures on
the water and solute in the ECF and ICF after equilibrium has occurred. You should be able to give the
numerical values for volume and osmolarity of the ECF and ICF. Briefly explain your rationale for solving each
problem. (Treat each solution below as a separate problem; do not make them additive.)
Patient receives an intravenous infusion of 1.5 L of glucose solution containing 0.25 moles of glucose per liter
of solution. Calculate ECF and ICF volumes and osmolarity at the point where 1/3 the glucose has entered the
cells.
How will this change the table? and why?
Total ECF ICF Plasma Vol L 40 L 13 L 27 L 2.8 L Sol osmol 11.4 3.705 7.695 0.798 mOsM 285 285 285 285Explanation / Answer
a. Patient receives an intravenous infusion of 1.5 L of glucose solution containing 0.25 moles of glucose per liter of solution.
Total number of moles of glucose received
= 1.5*0.25
= 0.375 moles
So the volume of Total fluid, ECF and plamsa will increase by 1.5L
whereas, the number of moles of total moles, ECF and plamsa will increase by 0.375.
Osmolarity will also change respectively.
Hence, the new table is
When 1/3 rd of glucose has enetered the cells,
ie. 0.125 moles of glucose will enter the cells
hence, the further changes will be:
the moles of glucose will increase in ICF and will decrease elsewhere.
Volume increases and gets added up in the table.
Same goes for the number of moles.
Molarity depends on both of the above factors and hence, changes accordingly.
