Explanation / Answer

Bone formation also called as ossification.Ossification begins about the third month of fetal life in humans and completed by late adolosence. The process takes two general forms.

Bone formation is bought about by two mechanisms.

Intramembraneous ossification: This type of ossification is confined to the formation of flat bones, such as cranial bones - the frontal, parietal, occipital, part of mandible and clavicles. The bones thus developed are reffered to as membrane bones. In this type of bone developement, the mesenchyme condenses into a richy vascularised layer od connective tissue,in which the cells are in contact with one another by long tapering process and the intercellular spaces are occupied by the randomly oriented collagen fibrils embedded in a thin, gel like ground substance.

Endochondral ossification: Initially,in endochondral ossification, the bones of the base of the skull,v ertebral column, pelvis and extremities(excluding clavicles)have a framework of hyaline cartilage. However, this framework of cartilage is later replaced with the bone. The bones thus formed are reffered to as cartilage bones. The first indication of endochondral ossification is the establishment of center of ossification. The primary center of ossification is characterised by striking enlargement of chondrocytes in the middle of the shaft of the hyaline cartilage. The cells in this region undergo hypertrophy and their cytoplasm becomes highly vacuolated. The lacunae of chondrocytes also enlarge at the expense of the intervening cartilage matrix....
