Question
Your group has 8 glucose molecules and 7 triglyceride molecules. There is plenty of oxygen so all of your substrate will undergo oxidative phosphorylation. Start with your glucose molecules and trace them through glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. Remember that 2 pyruvate are produced from each glucose molecule. The triglyceride is composed of a glycerol and 3 fatty acid chains of palmitic acid (a 16 carbon saturate fatty acid). Your triglyceride molecules will go through beta-oxidation. The end product of beta-oxidation is acety CoA. For each fatty acid chain that goes through beta-oxidation, 8 acetyl-CoA, 7 NADH, and 7 FADH are produced The acetyl-CoA that is produced from beta-oxidation will then enter the Krebs cycle, while the NADH and FADH produced during beta-oxidation will go directly to the electron transport chain. Remember, there are 3 fatty acio chains on each triglyceride molecule.Explanation / Answer
13. Total number of Acetyl-CoA produced is 8*3*7=168.8 is number of Acetyl-Coa produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides.
14. NADH produced by beta oxidation is 7*3*7=147. 7 is number of NADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides.
15. FADH produced by beta oxidation is 7*3*7=147. 7 is number of FADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides.
16. ATP produced directly is 0 as during krebs cycle NADH and FADH are produced which further convert ADP to ATP.
17. NADH produced by krebs cycle is 7*3*3=63. 3 is number of NADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides.
18. FADH produced by krebs cycle is 7*3*1=21. 1 is number of FADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides.
19. NADH produced by krebs cycle is 7*3*3=63. 3 is number of NADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides. Each NADH produces 3 ATP thus total ATP is 63*3=189.
20.FADH produced by krebs cycle is 7*3*1=21. 1 is number of FADH produced by beta oxidation,3 is number of fatty acid molecules from one triglyceride,7 is the total number of triglycerides. Each FADH produces 2 ATP thus total ATP is 21*2=42.
21.Total atp produced is 189( From NADH)+42(From FADH)+7*3=21(NADH from beta oxidation)+7*2=14 (FADH from beta oxidation)=264.
22. NADH produced is 5*8=40( 5 is number of NADH from one glucose molecule, 8 is number of glucose molecule)+7*3*7=147(7 is number of triglyceride,3 is number of fatty acids in one triglyceride,7 is number of NADH from one fatty acid by beta oxidation)+7*3*8*3=504(7 is number of triglyceride,3 is number of fatty acids in one triglyceride,8 is number of Acetyl-CoA produced from one fatty acid,3 is number of NADH from one Acetyl-CoA)=691
23. FADH produced is 0*8=0( 0 is number of FADH from one glucose molecule, 8 is number of glucose molecule)+7*3*7=147(7 is number of triglyceride,3 is number of fatty acids in one triglyceride,7 is number of FADH from one fatty acid by beta oxidation)+7*3*8*1=168(7 is number of triglyceride,3 is number of fatty acids in one triglyceride,8 is number of Acetyl-CoA produced from one fatty acid,1 is number of FADH from one Acetyl-CoA)=315.
24.ATP produced from all substrates is 691*3=2073(691 is number of NADH produced from all substrates,3 is number of ATP per NADH molecule)+315*2=630(315 is number of FADH produced from all substrates,2 is number of ATP per FADH molecule)+2*8=16(2 is net yeild of ATP from glycolysis pathway,8 is number of glucose molecule)=2719.
