NAME SECTION DATE UNIT QUIZ: Critical Thinking and Application Questions 2 1 Your lab partner argues with you that if you add acid to a solution, the hydrogen ion concentration should increase and, therefore, the pH should increase. Is he correct? What do you tell him? 2 A hyporthetical drug binds all of the bufer molecules in the blood, effectively removing them from the blood. Predict what will happen to the pH of the blood if hydrogen ions are added to it. 3 You take the boiled lipase from Exercise 2-3 and compare its structure to the normal, unboiled lipase. You note that the two structures differ. Why are they different? How does this help to explain your results? 4 The blood is largely composed of water. Which types of biological molecules can the blood transport safely throughout the body (polar covalent, nonpolar covalent, and/or ionic)? Which types of biological molecules can the blood not transport safely throughout the body (polar covalent, nonpolar covalent, and/or ionic)? Why? Chemistry Unit 2 27

Explanation / Answer

1)

pH denotes the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution.

pH 0 to 7 - Acidic

pH 7 to 14 - Basic or alkaline

pH 7 is neutral - number of hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions are equal in number.

When hydrogen ions are higher in a solution, it means that pH is acidic or the pH decreases.

2)

Drug binds to buffer molecules in the blood and removes all of it. Buffers resist the change of normal blood pH and when such buffers are removed and hydrogen ions are added, it decreases the blood pH to be more acidic.
