Question

I am stuck on a few mult choice questions, please help. (answer is not A)

Which of the following is TRUE of a cholinergic synapse?

Acetylcholine is released from the post-synaptic cell.

Acetylcholine enters the pre-synaptic cell.

Acetylcholine enters the post-synaptic cell.

Acetylcholine is released by the pre-synaptic neuron.

Propagation" of a nerve impulse refers to: (answer is not C)

activation of voltage-dependent calcium channels on the presynaptic neuron

depolarization and repolarization of the axon at nodes of Ranvier

creation of an action potential at the axon hillock

release of a neurotransmitter from the presynaptic neuron

a)

Acetylcholine is released from the post-synaptic cell.

b)

Acetylcholine enters the pre-synaptic cell.

c)

Acetylcholine enters the post-synaptic cell.

d

Acetylcholine is released by the pre-synaptic neuron.

Explanation / Answer

1. d) Acetylcholine is released by pre-ynaptic Neuron.

Explanation - Theoreticaly Neuron is a single cell. Acetylcholine is released from pre synaptic neuron in both Sympthetic and Parasympathetic system, but neurotransmitter in post synaptic is different in both. In parasympathetic post synaptic release Acetylcholine an in Sympthetic neurotransmitter is Adrenaline or Noradrenaline (mostly). That's why parasympathetic i also called as Cholinergic system and Sympthetic as Adrenergic system.

Acetylcholine is released in pre synaptic in both the cases.

2. b). Depolarization and Repolarization of axon at nodes of Raniver.

Explanation - action potential at axon hilloc starts nerve impulse it does NOT propogate it. Propogation is by Saltatory Conduction (in mylenited) nerve ie by depolarization and repolarization at nodes of Raniver.
