Question 33
You are training a 400-meter running athlete who states she is taking a supplement to increase the bioavailability and activity of phosphoglucoisomerase (a glycolysis pathway enzyme) to boost her race performance. What is the effect you expect?
A.
Some improvement since the rate of anaerobic glycolysis will increase
B.
Worse performance because the levels of enzymes are finely tuned and the disequilibrium from the supplement will affect glycolytic activity
C.
No change
D.
Not enough information
Question 34
Which of the following metabolic pathways generates the most ATP if it is only taking place once?
A.
the ATP – PC pathway
B.
anaerobic glycolysis
C.
anaerobic glycolysis combined with the electron transport system
(skipping the Krebs cycle)
D.
beta oxidation combined with the electron transport system
(skipping the Krebs cycle)
Question 35
Which of the following statements is true concerning homeostasis?
A.
The terms steady state and homeostasis refer to the same thing; therefore a homeostasis could be attained during exercise.
B.
A true homeostasis is not attained during exercise; however a steady state may be attained with exercise.
C.
If I were shivering (from cold temperatures); I could still be in homeostasis.
D.
If I am in a steady state, I am automatically in homeostasis
E.
None of the above are true
Question 36
At an RER of 0.75, there are 5 kcal per liter of carbon dioxide used when measured by indirect calorimetry.
True
False
Question 37
What is the work rate of person who weighs 100 kg and is cycling on a Monark cycle ergometer at 75 rpm and a resistance of 2 kg?
150 Watts
900 Watts
2,500 kgm/min
33.3 Watts
A.
Some improvement since the rate of anaerobic glycolysis will increase
B.
Worse performance because the levels of enzymes are finely tuned and the disequilibrium from the supplement will affect glycolytic activity
C.
No change
D.
Not enough information
Explanation / Answer
Hi
33. Answer is: C. No change
The enzyme phosphoglucoisomerase is an involved in both glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. It interconverts glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate. So addition of this enzyme increases both breakdown as well as buildup of glucose. So no net change would occur.
34. Answer is: D: beta oxidation + Etc
The beta oxidation of 18 carbon fatty acid produces 9 acetyl coA, 9 FADH, 9 NADH. The acetyl Coa needs krebs cycle. So only FADH and NADH enter the ETC. 1 FADH = 2 ATP; 1 NADH = 3 ATP; so totally 18+27= 45 ATP. This is much higher than any other combinations.
35. The answer is: B. A true homeostasis is not attained during exercise; however a steady state may be attained with exercise
The homeostasis and steady state refer to simialr concepts. The homeostasis is the resting physiologic state. Main features are absolut or near absolute constancy in body functions. The steady state is achieved during exercise induced change in the resting internal environment. Homeostasis is not maintaned during exercise. Body attains new steady state during exercise.
