Question 57

A person exercises in their “fat burning zone” for 4 hours at 35% VO2peak. The O2 cost of exercise at that work rate is 0.5L/minute. Following exercise the subject rewards himself with an ice-cream sundae (700kcal). The following statement is true(assume 5kcal/lit of O2):

A.

The subject is in neutral energy balance

B.

The subject consumed fewer calories than they expended during exercise

C.

The subject consumed more calories than they expended during exercise

D.

Can’t say

A.

The subject is in neutral energy balance

B.

The subject consumed fewer calories than they expended during exercise

C.

The subject consumed more calories than they expended during exercise

D.

Can’t say

Explanation / Answer

Lets calculate the Calories burned by the subject -

O2 cost (of exercise) = 0.5 L/minutes

Given that calorie burned per Liter O2 consumed = 5 kcal/L of O2

Therefore total calorie burned in 1 Minute = O2 cost × Calorie burned per LITER O2 consumed.

Total calorie burned in 1 minutes = 0.5 L/min × 5 kcal/L = 2.5 kcal/min

Now we have calorie burned in 1 minutes = 2.5 kcal/min

The duration of exercise is 4 hours or 4 × 60 minutes = 240 minutes.

Therefore total calorie burned in 240 minutes = 2.5 kcal/min × 240 min

= 600 kcal.

The given calorie value in Ice cream = 700 kcal.

Therefore answer is (C) The subject consumed more calories than he expended during exercise.
