Why does the muscular effort required in a lateral raise increase as the weight is moved closer to a 90° angle? What could an individual do to make performing a lateral raise easier?

Along with extension and adduction of the glenohumeral joint, what action must occur at that joint in order for you to scratch that itch? In what plane does this movement occur and about what axis? Explanation / Answer

A lateral dumbell raise, movement occur in saggital plane and around the axis of shoulder joint. This is done in exercise. Muscular effort increases as the weight reach closer to 90° angle because of increase in gravitational force. Gravitational force increases as the height of the dumbell weight is increased. Hence one has to apply more force to raise the weight of the dumbell. To make lateral raise movement easier, one has to raise it with straight back and turn the wrist when it reaches the half way.

Along with extension and adduction of the Glenohumeral joint, abduction and internal rotation must occur to reach out to back and scratch the itch. All these movement occurs in saggital plane and around the axis of shoulder joint or shoulder girdle. There are mainly three muscles are involved in Glenohumeral joint as follows:-

1) Supraspinatus:- this muscle assist in lifting the arm above the head. Origin from supraspinous fossa on the body of scapula and insert on superior facet of greater tubercle of humerus.

2) Subscapularis:- this muscle twist the arm behind the back. This muscle originate from Subscapularis fossa and insert on lesser tubercle of humerus.

3) Infraspinatus:- Twist the arm out side from the body. This muscle originate from infraspinous fossa of scapula and inserted on greater tubercle of humerus bone.
