A researcher is interested in studying the influence of hormones on mating behavior. Participants will consist of introductory psychology students at Texas A and M.

In recruiting participants, the researcher describes the study as one focusing on the influence of hormones on human behavior. Furthermore, the recruitment advertisement indicates that individuals must be willing to provide a blood and urine sample (in order to measure their hormones). In addition, they will be filling out a questionnaire concerning their beliefs and behaviors.

Specifically, for both sexes the greater your level of testosterone the more sexual partners you have had in the past. How does the fact that this sample was self-selected influence generalizability, and how can we solve this problem?

Explanation / Answer

The conditions under which participants actually mate or think about it may vary from experimental condition when the research is going on. Since the method of researcher is qualitative in this case, the only way to solve the problem would be to use mixed methods and quanititative methods to generalize. By using mixed methods we can predict the subsequent use and effect of research on a wider population which in turn will increase the generalizabilty and solve the problem.
