Question

100% 1. The Figure to the right is a model of the cardiovascular system. It consists of a heart and a circulation that perfuses the lungs (pulmonary circulation) and the other major organs (heart, brain, muscle, bone, Gl+ liver, kidney, skin, and others (lumped together). The cardiac output (CO) is 5 L/min. The % of CO for each organ is given. The pressure at the aorta (MAP) is maintained constant at 102 mm Hg and the right atrial pressure is 2 mm Hg. The pressure in the pulmonary artery is 15 mmHg and at the left atrium it is 5 mmHg. Sglees a) What is the total peripheral resistance (TPR)? b) What is the pulmonary vascular resistance?

Explanation / Answer

a)

the cardiac output = 5 L/min

mean arterial pressure (MAP) = 102mmHg

mean venous pressure = the right atrial pressure = 2 mmHg

total peripheral resistance (TPR) = 80x(Mean Arterial Pressure - Mean Venous Pressure ) / Cardiac Output.

= 80x(102-2)/5

=1600 mmHg.min.L-1

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

b)

pulmonary artery pressure = 15mmHg

pulmonary wedge pressure = left atrium pressure= 5mmHg

cardiac output = 5 L/min

Pulmonary vascular pressure = 80*(Pulmonary artery pressure – Pulmonary wedge pressure)/Cardiac output

= 80*(15-5)/ 5

= 160 mmHg.min.L-1
