Question
A medical technician collects buccal cells from a patient in order to run some tests.
1. Which of the following statements about these buccal cells is CORRECT?
a)The technician could compare genetic material from these cells with genetic material from blood collected at a crime scene
b)Many of the cells will be undergoing meiosis
c)To directly visualise the nucleus of these cells, the technician will stain them with eosin
d)The cells are likely to contain a relatively high number of mitochondria compared to cardiac muscle
2. provide an explanation for each options (a, b, c, and d) why there are true/false
Explanation / Answer
1.The technician could compare genetic material from buccal cells with genetic material from blood collected at a crime scene.
2. Explanation for each option:
a)The genetic material of buccal cells resembles the genetic material of all body cell. But the matured RBC in the blood lacks in genetic material.
b)Buccal cells does not undergo meiosis. The meiosis only occurs in gametes (spermatogenesis and oogenesis). In the buccal cell number of mitotic divisions occurs to compensate the damaged mucosa and for replication of buccal layer.
c)As the cells are minute structure we can't see the nucleus of cells directly. Only we can visualize with the assistance of microscope.
d) cardiac muscle are the cells which contain 5000 mitochondria far more than any other body part. Because the continuous beating of heart require more energy than any other cells in the body (mitochondria is know as power houses of the cell).
