Name Padnina Aleiarder Section Date Check Your Understanding Critical Thinking and Application Questions REVIEW The condition pulmonary fibrosis is caused by the replacement of elastic fibers in the lung with inelastic collagen fibers, which decreases the lungs' distensibility (the ability to stretch outward). Would pulmonary fibrosis make inspiration or expiration difficult? Explain. 1 Certain chest deformities prevent normal expansion of the chest. Explain why this makes ventilation difficult in terms of pressure and volume. 2

Explanation / Answer

1. Pulmonary fibrosis would make inspiration difficult because pulmonary fibrosis decreases the compliance of the lungs. During pulmonary fibrosis the lungs lose their distensibility and become stiffer. Therefore extra work has to be done to bring in a normal volume of air. This makes inpiration difficult because during inspiration lungs expand to bring in air.

2. The lungs perform the function of inspiration and expiration during which they expand and return to their normal size. The rib cage also expands in response to inspiration so that the lungs can accomodate more air. In case of chest deformities, the rib cage might not expand and the diaphragm might not lower itself, due to which the lungs would not be able to expand which would result in the lungs having a lower volume of air. Therefore chest deformities can cause difficulty in breathing.
