Question
Burt, the new lab assistant, was asked to make 0.9% sodium chloride solution by putting 4.5 grams of NaCl in the bottom of a graduated cylinder and bringing the volume up to 500 mls with distilled water. Instead, he brought the volume of the solution up to 1 liter. MW NaCl=58.5 g/mol
a. what is the percentage concentration of the solution he made?
b. what is its osmolarity?
c. when human RBC's are placed into Burt't incorrect solution, would they swell, shrink, or stay the same size? explain why based on the concept of tonicity. assume RBC osmolarity is 300 mOsM.
Explanation / Answer
a. The percentage if solution he made is (4.5/1000)*100= 0.45% b. Osmolarity = (4.5/58.5) *1000 * 2 = 154 mOsM c. As the solution is hypotonic, water will flow from solution to inside of the cell thus making it swell up. Water moves from it's high concentration to low concentration.Related Questions
