This flattening of villi is called villous atrophy this leads to poor absorption of nutrients, vitamins, minerals and decreased surface area and loss of lactase enzyme may lead to lactose intolerance

Symptoms include chronic diarrhoea with steatorrhoea, abdominal pain and distention and weight loss and longterm effect include nutrient deficiencies such as anemia, vit. D. Def. Causing decreased bone density and b complex deficieny causing mouth ulcers etc.,
