Question

Lie detector tests are used in our society by law enforcement agencies to help determine the guilt or innocence of a suspect. The basis of these exams is to assess the body’s reaction to stress via our sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system. The effects of the sympathetic nervous system are widespread. Pick one gland, organ, or system that is affected by the sympathetic nervous system, describe the physiology of its actions on the chosen structure/system, and how the lie detector test assesses these changes. Use 250 words.

Explanation / Answer

One of the organ that is affected by sympathetic nervous system is the heart. When the lie detector test is done and the person whose test is done and if he is speaking a lie then it will affect the functionality of the heart.

As a result the lie detector at once detects it and tells that person is telling a lie.

The heart of the person on whom the test is done starts to beat fastly as a result in the increase of heart rate. Due to which the blood pressure of the person increases and also it affects the body temperature and the temperature of the body also increases.

These symptoms are enough for a lie detector to detect the changes happening in the heart of the person and so it detects that the person is telling a lie.

And when the person is not telling a lie then all the activities in his heart will be at normal rate which tells that he is telling the truth.

This technique is somehow helpful in the legal system and hence after the order made from the court the lie detector test of the culprit is performed.
