Can cardiac muscle be tetanized? Why or why not? What is the physiological significance of this for the heart? (1 pt) 5. Compare and contrast excitation contraction coupling in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Be sure that you make clear any differences between the two and the significance of those differences. (1 pt) 6. 7. (a) Resting heart rate in healthy individuals is often around 70 beat per minute. Considering that the

Explanation / Answer

5)

Cardiac muscle can not be tetanized because of it's long refractory period that is of 180-200 msec during which it doesn't respond to any stimulus . More than half of mechanical contraction is over during absolute refractory period . Therefore tetanus phenomenon is not seen . It is protective for heart .

6)

Excitation contraction coupling

Skeletal muscle - rapid process , time from initial depolarization to initiation of Contraction is 10 msec

Cardiac muscle - more rapid process ( time is less than 10 msec )
