Question
EXAMPLE:
Explain how activation of the GABA neuron in the VTA affects DA release in the NAcc (independent of the possible influence of ?-endorphin or dynorphin):
Increased activity of the GABA neuron would activate ionotropic GABA receptors on the DA neuron that terminates in the NAcc. This would allow Cl- to enter the cell, which would hyperpolarize the cell membrane and which would decrease DA release in the NAcc
What happens to GABA release when ?-endorphin is administered?
GABA terminals
How does administration of ?-endorphin affect dopamine in the NAcc?
How does administration of dynorphin affect dopamine in the NAcc?
How would administration of ?-endorphin affect the threshold for electrical self-stimulation?
How would administration of dynorphin affect the threshold for electrical self-stimulation?

Explanation / Answer
What happens to GABA release when endorphin is administered?
ans:Endorphins are a type of analgesics which is a polypeptide. When endorphin is administered, it inhibits the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA with subsequent release of dopamine.
How does administration of endorphin affect dopamine in the NAcc?
ans: In NAcc,the administration of endorphin(beta) increases the dopamine levels and happens primarily with the analgesic mediated prolactin secretion, as similar profiles of beta-endorphin administration are seen in intact animals and animals whose pituitary glands have been removed(hypophysectomized ).
How does administration of dynorphin affect dopamine in the NAcc?
ans:Opioid peptides in the form of dynorphin act by a negative feedback mechanism to limit dopamine levels in the NAcc.
How would administration of endorphin affect the threshold for electrical self-stimulation?
Endorphin, which facilitates passive avoidance behaviour has the opposite effect on electrical self stimulation, once elicited by electrodes.
How would administration of dynorphin affect the threshold for electrical self-stimulation?
Administration of dynorphin will have no effect on eliciting electrical self-stimulation. The opiod activity is associated with stimulation of feeding behaviour.
