Question
Part A Readings of spirometry are usually estimated first through a calculator that is based on height, weight and gender and then the actual readings are taken. At the end the interpretation is based on dividing the actual readings on the estimated readings. Use this in your calculations and interpretations of the cases. The calculator could be found in http://www.brianmac.co.uk/spirometer htm While conducting a spirometry, a 23-years old male. 170cm tell values were as the followings: (all measurements in liters) TV: 0.5; IRV: 3.1; ERV: 1.2; RV: 1.2; FVC: 4.8: IC: 3.5; FRC: 2.4: TLC: 5.8, FEV: 4.2 Are these readings normal or abnormal? If not determine which one isn't Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, including spaces) 3800 Character(s) remaining Submit Request Answer Provide Feedback Next >Explanation / Answer
From the online calculation the obtained values are
TV : 0.6 L; IRV : 3L; ERV : 1.2L; TLC : 6L; RV : 1.2L; FVC : 4.9L; IC : 3.6L; FRC : 2.4L; FEV1 : 4.2 L
Dividing actual reading by estimated readings,
TV = 0.5/0.6= 0.83
IRV = 3.1/3 = 1.033
ERV = 1.2/1.2= 1
RV = 1.2/1.2 = 1
FVC = 4.8/4.9= 0.979
IC = 3.5/3.6 = 0.972
FRC = 2.4/2.4= 1
TLC = 5.8/6= 0.966
FEV = 4.2/4.2= 1
Hence, all the values are normal with very minute differences.
