Question

the notion that there has been substantial work done trying to determine if one’s ratio of slow oxidative muscle fibers to fast glycolytic fibers is fixed genetically or can be altered. Your lab hypothesizes that the ratio can be altered with aerobic training. A. What is a histological (stained tissue) prediction you would test? Explain. B. In another test, muscles were removed from trained and untrained rats. The muscles were perfused with oxygenated saline and stimulated to simulate exercise. The oxygen and CO2 levels in the perfusate were monitored. One could, in other words, calculate the RQ for the exercising muscles. Very cool! If your original hypothesis is true, how will the RQ of isolated, exercising muscles from trained vs untrained rats compare? Will there be any effect? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

RQ i.e. respiratory quotient is the ratio of carbon dioxide production to that of oxygen consumption. It reflects the contribution of fats, carbohydates, proteins to the oxidation of fuel mixture.

When more work is performed then the rate of consumption of oxygen rises and more carbon dioxide is produced. And it results in greater value of the respiratory quotient.
