Question

1. What does oxygen consumption measure? (a) fat utilization (b) aerobic fitness (c) aerobic metabolism (d) carbohydrate metabolism

*I would think it would be between aerobic fitness and aerobic metabolism. I'm a little confused what is the difference between two? Help explain?*

2. When does deamination of proteins contribute to aerobic metabolism? (a) during heavy weight raining exercise (b) during high intensity interval training (c) during high intensity aerobic exercise (d) during moderate intensity exercise greater than 1 hour in duration

*Again, I would think it would be both (c) and (d)????

3.What type of exercise would most likely produce free radicals? (a) resistance training (b) cross country skiing (c) sprinting (d) tennis

*I know the rise in oxygen delivery to your cells, increases free radical production. Thus cardio exercise produces free radicals. Besides resistance training and sprinting both skiing and tennis are cardio exercises????

Explanation / Answer

1. The answer is aerobic fitness

Aerobic metabolism is the process through which body produces energy through combustion of carbohydrates, fats and protein. It is calculated through oxygen consumed and carbon dioxide produced.

aerobic fitness also called cardiovascular fitness is the amount of oxygen transported in the blood and pumped by the heart to the working muscles and as the efficiency of the muscles to use that oxygen.

2. The answer is (d) during moderate intensity exercise greater than 1 hour in duration

Protein deamination becomes aerobi metabolism during endurance training.

Strength training leads anaerobic metabolism of protein.

3. Tennis match is played with rest intervals in between but cross country skiing is a countinuius exercise with no intervals. Thus skiing do not provide time for recovery and is more exhausting. So it produces much more free radicals than tennis

So the answer is cross country skiing
