  1. Watch the links above and tell me what you think after reading chapter 1-3 about the ethical issues faced in this investigation and firing of a state employee by then Governor Palin of Alaska.

Ethics is the discipline of determining good and evil and defining moral duties. The duties refer to the responsibilities that are attached to a specific role, and these responsibilities or obligations must be fulfilled to be good.Only those behaviors would be subject to ethical judgments that are performed by humans who are acting with free will and that affect others. As they state in this video, Palin firing commissioner Monoghan was completely legal as she does have the right to hire and fire executive branch department heads. But the fact that Palin's decision to fire him was based on a personal issue she had with Monoghan not firing her ex brother-in-law, it becomes clear that her decision to fire Monoghan was not an ethical decision, as it was a self-serving decision that benefited her personally. As Palin was in a position of power, she has a certain moral obligation to not abuse that power, which in this situation she did by firing someone for personal reasons rather than professional ones. One could say that she was practicing egoism here, or that she acted immoral according to Immanuel Kant's formula of ends since she used Monoghan as a means to get her ex brother-in-law fired and did not respect Monoghan's right to make his own decisions within his position of power as commissioner by firing him when he did not obey her orders. Abuse of power is something we are seeing a lot in our political offices these days, firing a member of her government was within her rights, but to use her power for a personal vendetta against a former family member is an abuse of power as they stated. Using your position in the government to further your personal gain goes against ever ethics principle that our founding fathers believed in. When Mrs. Palin chose to fire Monegan it took his authority away and not trusting the judgment of her cabinet member that the state trooper did not deserve to be fired spits in the face of the American legal system.

2. What if you had the power to change the issues surrounding income disparity in our country? Based on the topics in chapter 3, how would you go about doing this?

In terms of income disparity, I personally think applying John Rawl's Veil of Ignorance theory could yield some sort of fairness. If people were ignorant to their own place in society when addressing issues such as income and wealth, then they would be able to make decisions based on justice and fairness because rational distribution would be the most logical conclusion since they do not know how they would benefit given that they don't know their place in society. Therefore, it would be in everyone's best self-interest to have fair wealth distribution. We already know that all races commit crime at about the same rate, so if I had the power to change something that would in effect help income inequality it would be to change laws that target minority groups such as "stop and frisk" as well as changing the Uniform Crime Index from a self report to more of an over watch from the FBI as the current UCI I believe creates a self fulfilling prophecy with "labeling theory.

Explanation / Answer

1. Generally there are two aspects of ethics which includes ability to discern right from wrong, good from evil and propriety and impropriety.

Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her powers as governor by trying to have her former brother in law fired as a state trooper who is the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative.

The report states that the impermissible and repeated contacts create conflicts of interest for subordinate employees who must face the superiors displeasure. It concludes that the action was a violation of Alska executive branch ethics act.

2. If i had power to change the issues surrounding income disparity, I would form a private sessions in anchorage to discuss the ethics reports and what portions should be made public.

The report continues in light of this constitutional and statutory authority and it is clear that governor Palin would fire commissioner Walt Monegan for any reason.
