Epilepsy -

Definition - Epilepsy is defined as a brain disorder characterized by an enduring predisposition to generate epileptic seizures and by the neurobiologic cognitive psychological and social consequences of this condition.

Signs & symptoms - these are depend on the epileptic discharges in the cerebral cortex and the extent and pattern propagation of the epileptic discharges in the brain.

Etiology -

- it can be genetical , traumatic, carcinogentic or pathological.

Diagnosis -

- it can be done by neuroimaging evaluation like MRI or CT scan & EEG.

- cerebrospinal fluid examination for meningitis or encephalitis.

- blood level of anti convulsions.

Treatment -

Pharmacological - administration of anti convulsions.

Non pharmacological - 1. Ketogenic diet 2. Vagal nerve stimulation.

Surgical - anterior callosotomy, lobecyomy & lesionectomy.

Prognosis -

It depends upon the type, extent & severity of epilepsy.

Prevention -

Patients education towards the disease and educate them to who to respond if they face such situations.
